Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced Wednesday that he will seek a third term at City Hall.
In a statement, Frey said he is running again this year to further the progress his administration has made in building more affordable housing and in continuing to reform the police department.
“While the trajectory of Minneapolis is strong, I am running for reelection to protect that progress and to keep fighting to make Minneapolis a safer, more affordable, and more prosperous city for everyone,” reads his campaign announcement.
Frey told MPR News that if he is re-elected this year, his third term would be his last.
So far, at least five people have announced they plan to challenge Frey’s bid for a third term: Rev. DeWayne Davis; State Sen. Omar Fateh; Jazz Hampton; Minneapolis City Council member Emily Koski; and Brenda Short.
Frey, who has at times been at odds with a majority of council members whose politics lean farther left than his, says his style favors pragmatism over ideology. Since he was first elected in 2017, Frey has issued more vetoes than both of his previous predecessors.
