Hayden Hackney transfer position amid Middlesbrough uncertainty

Hackney played 45 minutes at Mansfield on Saturday at the end of a week which started with fresh reports linking the 23-year-old with a move away.

Boro’s Championship rivals Ipswich Town are said to be interested in Hackney, who is also admired by a number of clubs in the Premier League and overseas.

With the summer window running until September 1, the uncertainty surrounding Hackney’s future looks set to rumble on. But Edwards has no concerns about the midfielder’s focus and was impressed with his showing in the first half at Field Mill on Saturday, when he partnered Aidan Morris, who wore the captain’s armband.

“H, as far as I’m concerned and aware at the moment, he’s here and that’s why he’s playing and out on the pitch,” said Edwards.

“He’s fully committed. He loves this football club and we love him.

“He’s a really good player, I thought him and Aidan showed that in the first half.”

Rav van den Berg is another player whose future is unclear, with the central defender on the radar of Brentford, Crystal Palace and a number of a Bundesliga clubs.

Van den Berg, like Hackney, was in action at the European Under-21 Championships but returned to Boro to link up with the squad in Portugal last week, and played at Mansfield.

“They had a bit of a break at the end of the season and then a week or 10 days at the end of that tournament, but they were both really keen to get back in and get in amongst it,” said Edwards.

“Because they haven’t had that long off, the catch up was quite quick as well.”

Finn Azaz and George Edmundson both missed Saturday’s game after picking up knocks in training.
