Travers joined on loan from Bournemouth late in the January window, with Boro having to prioritise the capture of a keeper after both Sol Brynn and Seny Dieng suffered serious injuries.
Travers is only 25 but has previously won promotion from the Championship with the Cherries, has played in the Premier League this season and has four Republic of Ireland caps.
And Carrick says the opportunity to sign the keeper last month was one Boro simply couldn’t turn down.

Travers went straight into the side for Monday’s defeat to Sunderland and played well, despite conceding three goals. He’s now set to be the No.1 for the rest of the season as Boro look to get their promotion bid back on track after a run of just two wins in their last nine games.
“Trav has settled in really well,” said Carrick.
“bviously with the injuries to Sol and Seny, it was something we needed to address and do something about. We’re delighted to have Trav.
“Tom [Glover] played and did well and now we’ve brought Trav in to leave us happy with the goalkeeper situation. He’s a good goalkeeper and he’s at an age where he’s got good experience.
“He’s played in some big, big games in the Premier League this season. That means he was ready to come straight in and make an impact here. He’s a good goalkeeper and it was an opportunity we just had to take.”
In an ideal world, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola would have said no to the Boro move.
The Spaniard wanted to keep Travers – who was a trusted deputy to first choice keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga – but was sympathetic to the player’s wishes.
“I think everything starts because Mark wants to play, wants to be a number one goalkeeper,” Iraola told the Bournemouth Echo.
“If you ask me, I don’t want to lose Mark Travers because he has been very good when he has performed.
“But also we have to understand the player, understand the club also if they made a deal because for sure financially also it’s good for the club.
“Sometimes you have to see with the loans or the possibility of okay, it’s financially good because probably they will pay the salary or you can increase the value of the player or the player needs to play.”
