Steve Watson’s Darlington message ahead of Alfreton trip

The Derbyshire side, who are just below Quakers in the table, are renowned for their long ball game, and Watson has a pretty good idea what to expect tonight and how his team should react, especially on what is likely to be a heavy pitch.

“It’s going to be physically tough, they’re going to be direct with long balls and throw ins into our box,” he said.

“We’ve got to play when we get our chances to play. We can’t get drawn into the way that Alfreton play, we haven’t got the personnel to do that.

“We need to defend the box well and when we get the chance to play, make it count.”

Quakers are looking to close the four-point gap on the play-off places and build on their home win over Marine on Saturday.

“We made a little ground up on Saturday, but it’s a shootout now. We’ll try and win every game, it’s just like last season,” said Watson.

Defender Kallum Griffiths will return tonight after serving a one match suspension on Saturday, while Ali Al-Shabeeb is added to the squad after missing recent games for personal reasons.

Forward Cameron Salkeld is out because of injury, while two more strikers Jack Maskell and Andrew Nelson are both doubtful, so Middlesbrough loanee Hazeem Bakre, who made a really good impression when he came on as a substitute on Saturday, will probably have a similar role again. Another new signing, Sam Hetherington, will also be included, but Caden Kelly is still away on trial with Stockport.

Alfreton’s home form has let them down this season. They have won only five times in fourteen games at the Impact Arena. Their away form is better and their 2-0 success at Scarborough last time out was their seventh away win on their travels.
