Terry Mitchell’s verdict on Darlington’s Kidderminster win

Quakers climbed back into the National League North play-off places thanks to Tuesday’s night’s 1-0 success, secured by Cedric Main’s late goal.

It was a fourth win in five games for in-form Darlington and the perfect way to bounce back from their weekend defeat at Leamington.

“Tonight was everything we can be and we still think we can get better,” said Mitchell.

“The lads were outstanding with and without the ball. We restricted them. Pete [Jameson] made a great save at the death. We created a lot of chances and we still think there’s room to improve. But that’s nitpicking. It’s an outstanding performance.

“We’re delighted. We’re ecstatic. We wanted to show the real Darlington and that’s what all the lads did. A great performance.”

Kidderminster, who remain top, had only conceded five home goals this season prior to Darlington’s visit and had lost just two of their last 16 games.

“We created a lot of good chances against a team with a brilliant defensive record,” said Mitchell, who praised Darlington’s matchwinners at both ends.

“It was a fantastic goal for Cedric and thoroughly deserved. He worked his socks off and it’s great he scored.

“And at the other end, when Pete [Jameson] was called upon he made an outstanding save at the end. We went in with a plan, the lads executed it.”

Attention now quickly turns to another crunch game when rivals Curzon Ashton head for Blackwell Meadows on Saturday. Curzon are just a place and three points above Darlington in the table.

Mitchell and boss Steve Watson are now looking for a repeat of last year when they finished the season in style – though this time the reward could be a play-off place rather than survival at the other end of the table.

Mitchell said: “They’re another quality side Curzon, a really good football side.

“We’ll look forward to that. There 20 games to go. This time last year we had to win 11. It’s a different situation now, if we can win 11 of the last 20…It’s one game at a time. The league is mad, everybody beats everybody.

“We’ll take one game at a time but we’re a good side. The lads have proved that, when we’re really at it we’re a match for anybody.”
