Councillor Michael Mordey, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “We’re really excited to be hosting the opening match of the Women’s Rugby World Cup in just one month’s time.
“It’s such a proud moment for our city to be hosting the opener for the biggest ever Women’s Rugby World Cup and we can’t wait to give a warm Sunderland welcome to the many thousands of fans from home and abroad who are coming here for the match.”(Image: Supplied)
Fans can witness the opening match at the Stadium of Light on Friday, August 22, at 7.30pm.
The match features England’s Red Roses going up against the USA.
A pre-match performance by pop artist Anne-Marie will set the stage for this grand event.
Councillor Beth Jones, cabinet member for communities, culture and tourism, said: “This is an event with something for everyone, whether you’re soaking up the live music and pre-match atmosphere in the free Fan Village, coming along to the opening match, watching the free fireworks later that night or coming to the fantastic family-friendly free entertainment in the fan village organised by Sunderland BID on the Saturday.(Image: Supplied)
“With tickets prices starting at just £10 for adults and £5 for children, I’d urge anyone who hasn’t already got a ticket for the opening match to snap up this chance to see world-class rugby here in Sunderland.”
Sunderland’s city centre will transform into a festive hub with the Fan Village in Keel Square open from 9am on match day.
It will host food and drink stalls, interactive characters, and rugby-themed activities.
The day’s celebrations will culminate in a fireworks display over the river at around 10.15pm, best viewed from the Keel Square Fan Village.
The week leading up to the match is packed with events, including a Seaburn Beach Festival on 20 August, and a vibrant Fan Village in Keel Square from 4pm on 21 August.
