Authorities in North Dakota evacuated some residents near a Cargill plant along the Red River, just across the border from Minnesota, following a hydrochloric acid leak on Monday morning.
The company said no one was injured, and there’s no ongoing threat to public health.
The corn processing plant is about 5 miles north of the cities of Wahpeton, N.D., and Breckenridge, Minn.
Cargill said the plant and some surrounding homes were evacuated after the leak. The plant was temporarily shut down until it’s determined that it’s safe for workers to return.
The company said it does not expect the shutdown will affect its ability to supply products to customers.
Richland County officials said a hazmat team from Fargo was assisting local and county agencies in their response to the incident.
KVRR-TV reported that authorities evacuated a one-mile radius around the plant, affecting a couple of farms. Officials also issued a shelter-in-place advisory for a three-mile radius.
WDAY-TV reported that roads several miles from the plant were closed Monday morning.
