The pay packets for the cast of the new Superman film have reportedly been disclosed, and the top earner might not be who you’d expect.
This release marks the first in DC Studios’ freshly rebooted cinematic universe. Now under the guidance of James Gunn, who serves as writer and director for the latest release.
Gunn is renowned for his work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, and it’s hoped he can bring a similar touch to DC’s roster of characters.
According to the film’s synopsis, when Superman becomes embroiled in conflicts both domestically and internationally, his actions come under scrutiny, giving tech tycoon Lex Luthor the chance to permanently sideline the Man of Steel.
Can intrepid journalist Lois Lane and Superman’s four-legged friend, Krypto, assist him before it’s too late?
The cast features a brand-new actor stepping into the daunting roles of Clark Kent and the Man of Steel, alongside a host of fresh faces playing the hero’s allies and foes, reports the Mirror.
Among them are Marvelous Mrs Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan as Clark’s colleague and romantic interest Lois Lane. Also joining the cast are Nathan Fillion from Castle and The Rookie fame, The Last of Us breakout star Isabella Merced, and The Righteous Gemstones actor Skyler Gisondo.
However, despite assuming the role of the eponymous hero now gracing cinemas, David Corenswet did not earn the most among his co-stars.
It is alleged that British actor Nicholas Hoult, who portrays the villainous Lex Luthor, was the highest earner for his role in the film. Reports suggest this is due to Hoult’s established film career and star power.
Hoult has appeared in Mad Max: Fury Road, several X-Men films for Fox, as well as The Menu, Clint Eastwood’s Juror No. 2, and the recent Nosferatu.
Corenswet and Brosnahan are both currently more recognised for their television work. While Corenswet had minor roles in Twisters and Pearl, he has starred in The Politician and miniseries We Own This City.
Brosnahan featured in the film The Amateur but took the lead role in the award-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Here are the reported cast salaries from highest to lowest:
- Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor – $2 million
- David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent – $750,000
- Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane – $750,000
- Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardener – $400,000
- Edi Gathegi as Mr Terrific – $400,000
- Antony Carrigan as Metamorpho – $250,000
- Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen – $200,000
- Isabala Merced as Hawgirl – $200,000
Reports also suggest that the top-billed cast members are due for additional paydays depending on the film’s box office performance. However, the specifics of such a deal remain unknown.
Deadline, however, has reported that the film has already raked in over $40 million. This impressive figure comes from previews held globally before the weekend.
This total only accounts for screenings on the Wednesday and Thursday prior to the film’s official release day. Projections estimate this could result in takings of around $115 million for the opening weekend.
Superman is in cinemas now.
