Darlington 3 Marine 1: Cedric Main scores twice for Quakers

Two penalties from Cedric Main and a header from Elliot Forbes were enough to give Quakers the points, although the visitors caused a few anxious moments when they got back into the game in the first half. But Quakers should perhaps have scored at least one more considering the chances that they had.

Manager Steve Watson said: “I thought we deserved to win based on our second-half display.

“We took the game by the scruff of the neck when we needed to, because we didn’t do enough in the first half.

“I was disappointed with the goal we conceded, but our stats were impressive – entries into the box, shots on target. We were more intense in the second half.

“Cedric took two good penalties, while we’ve been working hard on set-plays for Elliot’s goal. He made a really good run across the defender to get his header in.

“Cedric said he should have had a couple more. The good thing is, we’re creating the chances, and the lads we’ve brought in have helped us.”

Quakers signed Sam Hetherington from Carlisle United and Hazeem Bakre from Middlesbrough on Friday, and Watson said: “We’ve not scored enough goals, and hopefully these two will provide more threat.

“Hazeem has got real pace and power, and hopefully Sam can provide that little pass that decides games.”

Main, who was back in the side after injury, was always a nuisance for Quakers, causing Marine several problems with his pace.

He put one chance into the side-netting and another into the hands of Marine goalkeeper Max Metcalfe, before a delightful piece of skill sent Jarrett Rivers running into the box, where he was brought down by a defender. Main shuffled in his run up and sent the keeper the wrong way.

Rivers nearly scored a second with a left-footed shot that Marine keeper Metcalfe, once of Middlesbrough, fumbled, but Will Hatfield couldn’t reach the rebound six yards out.

Marine didn’t offer much apart from a weak shot by Jack Hazlehurst and a penalty appeal for a push, before they equalised just before half-time when Chris Doyle scored with a header from a free-kick at the second attempt.

Quakers took control of the second half from the first whistle. They pushed Marine back into their final third and Matty Cornish and Scott Barrow both went close.

They broke through on 59 minutes when Barrow curled a free-kick over from the left for Forbes to head his third goal of the season past Metcalfe.

New signing Bakre came on and added some energy into the attack, and he had a left-foot effort saved at the near post.

Hatfield also had an effort blocked on the line and Cornish headed wide before Quakers made the game safe on 79 minutes.

Main’s pace took him away from Josh Wardle, who could only collide with him in the area, and the striker scored his ninth goal of the season from the spot with another little shuffle along the way.

There could have been more goals, but Hatfield had a left-footed shot deflected wide before Bakre had another strike blocked.
