Kyril Louis-Dreyfus explains Sunderland Florent Ghisolfi appointment

Ghisolfi’s appointment has been confirmed today, with the 40-year-old set to start work on Thursday after leaving his role as sporting director of Serie A club Roma last month.

Ghisolfi will work alongside sporting director Kristjaan Speakman as Sunderland continue to prepare for their return to the Premier League, with the Black Cats having made a bold and eye-catching start to the summer transfer window.

After completing the record-breaking signing of Habib Diarra and with Noah Sadiki set to join, Ghisolfi’s arrival is seen as another major coup for the Black Cats. The Frenchman was wanted by several leading European clubs this summer.

Ghisolfi said: “The club – players, staff, and supporters – achieved an amazing result last season.

“Together, these people brought Sunderland back to the Premier League, and I’m strongly determined to bring my experience and support this group to ensure the squad is ready to take the next step.

“This is an exciting challenge, and I’m looking forward to working alongside Kyril, Kristjaan, and Régis, as we enjoy this exciting new chapter in Sunderland’s history, alongside our fans.”

Sunderland say Ghisolfi’s appointment “represents an organic evolution of SAFC’s long-term strategy, as the club continues to prepare for the opportunities and demands of the Premier League”.

Ghisolfi had an 11-year playing career which included spells at SC Bastia and Stade de Reims, where he moved into coaching and became assistant manager. He held the same role at FC Lorient, Regis Le Bris’ former club, from 2017 to 2019.

But it was after moving upstairs that Ghisolfi really started to turn heads in the game. He impressed as sporting director at RC Lens and OCG Nice in France before his switch to the Italian capital.

Louis-Dreyfus said: “We have been on an incredible journey over the last four years, and we now face a new challenge as we prepare for life in the Premier League.

“The appointment of Florent marks an exciting new chapter in that journey. This appointment enhances our capabilities in line with the club’s long-term vision, and evolving our leadership structure in this way reflects our continued commitment to building a sustainable and competitive football club.

“I’m confident that players, staff, and fans alike will join me in welcoming Florent to Sunderland and supporting him in his new role.”
