Carrick is the longest serving boss in the second tier but his Boro side underwhelmed last season, slumping to a 10th placed finish despite the aim being promotion at the start of the campaign.
That has led to an in-depth review being carried out at Rockliffe as club bosses look to get to the bottom of the issues that plagued Boro last season.
Whatever the outcome of the review, the aim next season will again be to win promotion to the Premier League.
And Carrick says he’s “constantly learning” after two full seasons in charge in what is his first job in management.

“It’s experience over time and dealing with certain situations that you just get used to dealing with day to day,” said Carrick in an interview with SkyBet.
“The ups and downs of the season and being consistent with how we do things is a big thing – you’re constantly learning.
“There’s always something new around the corner. I don’t think it’s anything major. I don’t think there’s been any really extreme surprises that I’ve not come across before in football. It’s how you adapt, deal with the day to day, and then the week to week and the random swings within the league.”
Asked about the most challenging aspect of managing in the Championship, Carrick said: “It’s the unpredictability really, from week to week.
“You’re playing against the range of performance levels from different teams, which can be quite different.
“It depends on what time of the season you play them and what kind of run the teams are on.
“There’s a lot of momentum shifts all the way through the league, apart from the top three or four teams. There’s been big momentum shifts for everyone else. The unpredictability of it is the biggest thing.”
