Middlesbrough head coach stance on Steven Gerrard & Marti Cifuentes

Gerrard’s odds tumbled earlier today, with the former Liverpool and England midfielder now joint favourites with some bookmakers.

But Gerrard isn’t on Boro’s shortlist as club officials continue the process of replacing Michael Carrick, who was sacked last week.

Cifuentes, who has been out of work since being placed on gardening leave by QPR at the end of last season, was also linked with the Riverside role earlier today, but the Spaniard isn’t under consideration and won’t be the next head coach.

Boro have been inundated with interest since Carrick’s departure earlier last week and club bosses have spent recent days closely assessing their options and speaking to candidates.

Interviews will continue to take place this week, with the likes of Rob Edwards and Steve Cooper known to be admired by Boro. Gary O’Neil has been a short price since Carrick’s departure, as has Danny Rohl, whose work at Sheffield Wednesday has impressed Boro bosses.

Rohl addressed his future in a fresh interview in Germany over the weekend, saying: “I see the interest from clubs as validation of my work. There were inquiries last year, too, even from Germany, from the Bundesliga . It feels good that my name is constantly being mentioned both here in England and in Germany.

“But I also know that football is fast-paced. The last 18 or 19 months are no reason to rest. I remain very, very ambitious. And I’m always ready to work hard. We’ll see what happens in the summer.”

Meanwhile, Boro confirmed earlier today that Castore will be the club’s new kit supplier.

That will stretch beyond the current campaign into the 2026/27 season, in which Boro will celebrate their 150th anniversary.
