But Neto Borges is not yet back in training and it remains unclear whether the Brazilian will play again before the end of the season.
Edmundson has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury in the win over Stoke City at the end of February.
“George is back training with the group,” confirmed Michael Carrick on Wednesday.
“We’re hopeful he’ll be back in and around the squad for Friday.
“He hasn’t done an awful lot of training but he has been back with us, which is good. It’s another one back and heading in the right direction.”

Carrick said: “We’ve certainly been hit by injuries quite severely over the season and ended up rolling with it and trying to make the best of it.
“It’s certainly proved challenging at times. But to get those boys back in and around it makes us feel stronger for the run in.
“It gives you more options to be able to deal with certain situations within games. As games develop moving into the later stages of the season, I think it’s important we have those options.”
Borges continues to get treatment on the ankle injury he suffered at Blackburn.
Carrick said: “He’s alright. He’s not back training with us. He’s desperate. He’s trying everything but at this stage he’s not quite ready.”
