Middlesbrough Women set for promotion decider in final day shootout

But he knew one of the most challenging aspects would be the first promotion and getting out of National League Division One North.

Mulhern and his players are now within touching distance.

With just one game to play, Boro Women are top of the table but the margins are incredibly fine.

They lead Cheadle Town by just three goals, the sides level on points ahead of Sunday’s final day fixtures.

After thumping seven goals past Doncaster Belles at the Riverside earlier this month, Boro climbed above Cheadle on goal difference. But not only do Boro now need to win at Barnsley on Sunday, they must also hope Cheadle don’t overturn the goal difference deficit when they host bottom of the table Fylde.

It’s so very finely poised.

But Mulhern’s only focus is on making sure his players take care of their own business and beat mid-table Barnsley at Oakwell.

“We just have to relax and do our job,” he said.

“My job is to keep everyone’s feet on the ground including my own.

“It’s just another game and we just have to do our job. I can’t even think about the consequences of not getting it done.

“It’s just looking forward and if we do the job to the best of our ability then it will be another win because that’s what we do.

“The players are under no pressure. I just want them to do the same as they’ve done every other game.

“We can’t worry about Cheadle. We’ve lost once this season and been really good in all the other games. What I wanted is to be in control of our destiny on the final day of the season.

“To get seven against Doncaster, I wish it had been a few more and it could have been. But we’re still in control of our destiny. We’re so close but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.”

Mulhern and Boro have big ambitions and the manager believes everything is in place for the club to climb through the divisions.

“100%, but this has always been the first step,” he said.

“After two years I think it’s brilliant we’re in this position. When I came into the club they were a point above relegation. Everyone has bought into what we’ve built in the last couple of seasons.

“When I came in and had a presentation I said it would take seven years to get to WSL1. That was being realistic. It’s difficult.

“It’s taken two years to get to this point. We’re not guaranteed anything. I did think it could take up to four because it was a new project.

“It would mean an awful lot to go up it’s only the first step. I won’t be happy until we’re in WSL2 and then the eyes will be on WSL1.”

Boro are going to be backed by a strong contingent of fans at Oakwell on Sunday, 2pm kick-off. Admission is available on the turnstiles for any fans who want to make the trip.
