The best case scenario for Borges is that he’ll spend a couple of weeks on the sidelines, which means he’ll miss the crucial game against Millwall on Saturday and the Easter double header against Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday.
Whether he’ll then be available to return for the final two games against Norwich and Coventry is not yet clear, with Michael Carrick saying the Brazilian is doing “absolutely everything he can to get back”.
Borges had been in brilliant form for Boro before he was forced off in Friday night’s win at Blackburn with an ankle injury. Carrick later admitted it looked like a “really bad twist” but at that stage Boro were still waiting for confirmation on the severity of the injury.

Borges was replaced in the side by the fit-again Rav van den Berg for Tuesday night’s defeat to Leeds United, while Boro were also boosted by the return of Dael Fry on the bench. He’s expected to soon be joined by George Edmundson, who is close to a return.
But despite that improving picture in the backline, Borges’ absence is still a major blow.
“We’re hoping it’s going to be a couple of weeks,” said Carrick.
“That’s what we’re hoping for. It might be a little bit longer, so because of the stage of the season we’re at, we’ll just have to see how it goes.
“He’s doing absolutely everything he can to get back. He’s desperate to be fit tomorrow, he’s that type of player.
“Most of the boys are like that to be honest, but he’s especially eager to get back.
“We’re hopeful on it. We’ll certainly be giving it every chance to get him back at some stage (before the end of the season).”
