North East: 1,200 pupils join together for Celebration of Sport

The Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust (BWCET) hosted its second Celebration of Sport at Gateshead International Stadium, bringing together Year 5 pupils from all of its primary schools and Year 4 pupils from its first school.

The event, described as a ‘masterclass in collaboration’, featured appearances from Great Britain basketball head coach Marc Steutel and Olympic long-distance runner Aly Dixon.Lucie Stephenson with a winning teamLucie Stephenson with a winning team (Image: Supplied)

Lucie Stephenson, deputy CEO of BWCET, said: “This event is about so much more than sport.

“It’s a celebration of our shared identity as a Trust family, a joyful and tangible way for our young people to meet, collaborate and compete with peers they might not otherwise encounter.

“With everyone wearing their Trust-coloured t-shirts and taking part together, it’s a day that truly brings our values to life.”(Image: Supplied)

Pupils took part in four sport-based sessions throughout the day, including multi-sport challenges, track and field events, and a mass-participation dance supported by video tutorials.

The event also included team-building activities, football skills, and tri-golf.

Aly Dixon, who won the 50km world championship in Romania in 2019, said: “Sports days are such a wonderful time to enjoy sports together and for so many schools that are part of this Trust to take part makes it such a special occasion.Marc Steutel and participantsMarc Steutel and participants (Image: Supplied)

“I loved seeing the kids participate and have such fun and loved joining in too.

“Now working at Foundation of Light, part of my role is to inspire children and use sport as a tool to help them live happier lives.

“Hopefully today’s event has done that.”

Marc Steutel said: “Seeing so many happy young faces enjoying a celebration of sport was so rewarding and paints such a positive picture for this area and region.

“It was a mammoth operation to host, run and manage such a big event which was so well organised and enjoyable.

“And there’s hopefully a few basketball stars of the future amongst the pupils too.”

The event was supported by Gateshead School Sport Partnership and funded through a mix of sponsorship and school sports premium funding.
