Riley Bains, Hartlepool, met deadpool star Ryan Reynolds

Riley Bains was diagnosed with osteosarcoma back in 2023 and had to have his lower leg amputated as a result.

His story touched thousands of people and led to him fulfilling his dream of meeting Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds.

Tonight, Hartlepool United will pay tribute to him during their game with Tamworth FC with applause at the ninth minute of the game.

Riley’s mother, Sarah Kidson, wrote a tribute to her son following his death, saying: “We will forever be proud of our little warrior.

“Rest in paradise, gorgeous boy. Love you to the moon and back.”

A Hartlepool United FC spokesperson said: “There will be an applause in the ninth minute during tonight’s fixture against Tamworth at the Prestige Group Stadium.

“Rest in peace Riley.”

A spokesperson for Tamworth Football Club said: “We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of young Hartlepool United fan, Riley Bains.

“Riley was diagnosed with osteosarcoma back in 2023 and fought the toughest battle anyone could face, at just nine-years-old.

“Last year, an online appeal by Micky Day from cancer charity Miles for Men on BBC Radio Tees was spotted by Ryan Reynolds, who reached out to Riley and his family and invited them to a special meeting at Wrexham AFC. In their time spent together, Reynolds described Riley as ‘an inspiration.’

“We would like to send our condolences and thoughts to Riley’s family, friends and everyone associated with him at this difficult time.
