Stockton Town in FA talks over play-off ‘disciplinary matter’

The Anchors booked a place in the Northern Premier League Premier Division play-off final thanks to their hard-fought 1-0 win at the The Map Group UK Stadium on Tuesday night.

The victory set up a promotion decider against Worksop on Monday, with Stockton just 90 minutes away from a place in National League North.

But there’s now uncertainty surrounding Stockton’s situation.

The matter relates to the start date of a suspension for club captain Adam Nicholson, who was sent off in a home win over Hyde on Saturday. He played in Tuesday night’s play-off game, with Stockton later taking to social media to say their understanding was that the defender’s suspension wasn’t due to start until Saturday, May 3.

A club statement was then released on Wednesday afternoon, which read: “Stockton Town FC can confirm that we are currently in communication with The FA regarding a disciplinary matter arising from Tuesday night’s play-off semi-final.

“We are confident that the club has acted correctly and in full compliance with FA notifications and procedures. We are engaging with the relevant authorities to ensure the matter is resolved appropriately and promptly.

“We appreciate that supporters may have questions and concerns. Please be assured that we will share a further update as soon as we are able to do so.

“Thank you for your unwavering support.”

Stockton were backed by a crowd of more than 2,000 on Tuesday night, with their victory secured thanks to a stunning second half strike from Kev Hayes.

The Anchors have enjoyed a remarkable rise in the last decade having played in the Wearside League just over 10 years ago.

Boss Michael Dunwell has led Stockton through the divisions and guided his side to the fourth round of the FA Trophy this season, a run which included a memorable home victory against former Premier League side Oldham Athletic.

Stockton were eventually knocked out on penalties by National League side Rochdale.
