Sunderland 1-0 Millwall player ratings: Mepham, Hume & Roberts impress

6 Patterson: Didn’t have loads to do but good clean sheet.

7 Browne: Used his experience to seamlessly slot in at right-back and helped Sunderland out of a sticky situation. Rock solid.

7 O’Nien: Defensively sound throughout. Surprise taker of late spot-kick and poor penalty but thankfully it didn’t prove costly.

8 Mepham: Did a good job on Millwall striker Coburn. Went close to a goal just after the break. Then came to Sunderland’s rescue when made a superb late block after O’Nien missed penalty.

8 Hume: Sunderland’s Mr.Consistent. Again played through the discomfort of his hip problem and his well taken goal turned out to be the winner.

7 Neil: Kept Sunderland ticking in the first half. Tidy and tireless.

7 Bellingham: Booked in the first period but managed game well after that. Always looked forward. Got himself into dangerous areas.

7 Rigg: Energetic midfield display. Looked much more like himself.

8 Roberts: Sunderland’s brightest spark. Created the opening goal with perfectly weighted cross and troubled Millwall throughout.

8 Mundle: Like Roberts, had the beating of Millwall’s defence. Won late penalty and was disappointed not to take it.

6 Isidor: Missed early chance and worked hard but could do with a goal.
