Eddie Howe Newcastle return confirmed after illness

Howe missed three Newcastle games after contracting pneumonia and needed treatment in hospital in Newcastle.

But the head coach left hospital last week and, after a spell of further recovery at home, returned to the club’s base and took training for the first time on Wednesday.

He will be back in the dugout for Newcastle’s crunch home clash with relegated Ipswich, with the Magpies looking to bounce back from their heavy defeat at Aston Villa last time out.

Newcastle confirmed Howe’s return in a statement on Thursday morning.

The club said: “Newcastle United are delighted to confirm that Eddie Howe has returned to his duties at the club’s Training Centre.

“Eddie had recently been hospitalised with pneumonia and has now returned to work after a period of recovery.

“We thank supporters for their warm wishes.”

It hasn’t yet been confirmed whether Howe will take Newcastle’s scheduled press conference on Friday morning.

Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones led the side in Howe’s absence and Newcastle won two out of three games, thumping Manchester United and Crystal Palace before the defeat at Aston Villa.

The Magpies are fifth in the table with five games to play. Just four points separate third and seventh, with the battle for a place in the top five and a place in next season’s Champions League set to go down to the wire.
