Newcastle cult hero Jonás Gutiérrez spotted busking in city

‘Spider-Man’ Gutiérrez was videoed, guitar-in-hand, sat by the iconic Grey’s Monument strumming a tune with an open case nearby for tips from the public.

The midfielder is donning a red jumper and grey cargo shorts and nods his head along with the music he is playing.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Gutiérrez said: “My city, my home. I am a Geordie, I love this city, I love these people.

“Thanks for everything NUFC. A dream come true playing guitar at the monument.”

Gutiérrez represented the club from 2008 to 2015, spending a period on loan to Norwich in 2014.

Playing on both flanks, the Argentine enamoured himself to fans with hard-working performances, crucial goals, and a trademark celebration – donning a red Spider-Man mask.

In 2013, Gutiérrez underwent surgery after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Dubbed as “the man who knows the true meaning of survival” by a commentator who called the Magpies’ game against West Ham in 2015, Gutiérrez assisted the opener and scored the winner as Newcastle ran out 2-0 victors to secure a place in the Premier League.

One fan showed their appreciation in a comment on the video, saying: “Never have I seen a player from any club adopt a city as their home as Jonas has with Newcastle.

“Love it Jonas, never forget all your effort and desire you gave to our club for the fans, especially coming back from Illness to keep us up, you’ll never be forgotten,” said another fan on Instagram.

“Once a Geordie always a Geordie!”
