Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough message amid uncertainty

Carrick’s own future is uncertain after Boro‘s 10th place finish, but the head coach told of his desire to continue in the Riverside hotseat after Saturday’s final day loss at Coventry, which ensures his side missed out on the play-offs.

Promotion was the aim this season but Boro faltered badly, particularly in the second half of the campaign, and Carrick accepts there’ll be “disappointment, frustration and anger”.

But he’s calling on supporters to keep the faith in Boro and his group of players going forward, despite this season’s missed opportunities.

“That’s a pretty obvious one for me,” said Boro’s boss.

“As a group, we’ve done a lot of good things over the last three years in terms of stability and how we play our football and how close we’ve been.

“It wasn’t our day [at Coventry], but really, where we finished on the final day was irrelevant – it was just you’re either in or you’re not.

“We’re disappointed we’re not in, obviously, but I do feel we’ve got a lot to build on, for sure.

“I get the disappointment, I get the frustration and I get the anger at times. That’s just part of sport.

“It’s the responsibility I have in this position to deal with, and the responsibility of the boys to deal with.

“Supporters deal with things in their way. You see that in the extreme emotions in the away end at the end.

“I hope, most importantly, they see how much the boys have given for them and how much the boys care.

“It means so much to them, so hopefully they continue to support the boys as much as they can.”
