Newcastle player ratings in Everton Premier League defeat

NEWCASTLE (3-4-3):

8 POPE: Made three excellent saves to prevent Newcastle suffering an even heavier defeat

6 Schar: Defended well enough for the most part, but his passing lacked its usual composure

6 Botman: Put in a solid shift at centre-half against the physically-imposing Beto – was taken off just after the hour mark

6 Burn: Played in a number of different roles as Howe changed things around

4 Murphy: Didn’t look comfortable playing as a wing-back, then gave the ball away in the build-up to Alcaraz’s goal after switching position

6 Tonali: It wasn’t one of the Italian’s best displays, although he at least tried to show composure when on the ball

5 Guimaraes: His effort couldn’t be faulted, but his driving forward runs largely came to nothing

5 Livramento: Started off at wing-back but finished in his more usual role – the standard of his crossing was mixed

5 Barnes: Failed to make an impact from his position on the left – too many of his crosses failed to reach their intended target

5 Isak: Failed to make a real impression in the final third, although a late volley flew just over

5 Gordon: Failed to shine against his former employers before he was withdrawn at the half-time break

Subs:

4 Willock (for Gordon, 46): Didn’t offer much in the second half – has endured a difficult season

6 Trippier (for Botman, 63): Got into some decent crossing positions and asked questions of Pickford

Wilson (for Murphy, 70)

Osula (for Barnes, 88)

(not used): Dubravka (gk), Lascelles, Krafth, Longstaff, Miley.

EVERTON (4-2-3-1):

PICKFORD 8; Young 6, Keane 7, O’Brien 7, Mykolenko 8; Garner 7, Gueye 6; Harrison 6, Alcaraz 8 (Doucoure 75), Ndiaye 6 (McNeil 75); Beto 6.

Subs (not used): Virginia (gk), Begovic (gk), Patterson, Chermiti, Welch, Broja, Calvert-Lewin.

Man Of The Match: JORDAN PICKFORD – The Wearsider almost ruined Newcastle’s Champions League party.
