Norwich appoint ex-Bristol City boss Liam Manning as new manager

Manning – who was born in Norwich and had a spell in the Norfolk club’s academy – takes over at Carrow Road following the departure of Johannes Hoff Thorup towards the end of last season, with Jack Wilshere having later also left following a brief interim spell in charge.

Norwich, who will hope to be one of Boro’s promotion rivals in the Championship next season, said Manning’s appointment came “following an extensive recruitment process”.

The 39-year-old former MK Dons and Oxford boss guided Bristol City into the Sky Bet Championship play-offs last season, where the Robins were beaten in both legs of the semi-final by Sheffield United.

Norwich confirmed Manning has signed a contract through to the summer of 2029, with a further update on his backroom staff to follow.

“I’m privileged and honoured to have the opportunity to work for this fantastic football club. It’s a wonderful club with a big history and tradition,” Manning said to canaries.co.uk.

“When I spoke to (sporting director) Ben (Knapper) and the owners about the opportunity here, I was really impressed by their vision and strategy for moving the club forward.

“I felt a clear alignment in how they want to play and develop players – that is something I was really excited to be a part of.

“It’s clear, there has already been a lot of valuable groundwork laid in recent seasons – it’s now important we build further on that and move the club forward.”

Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper is confident Manning can push the Canaries on from a disappointing mid-table finish last season.

“Liam knows the league, has consistently demonstrated an ability to outperform resources and his approach aligns with our footballing ideas and strategy,” Knapper said.

“He is an exceptionally bright coach who will push himself, and everyone around him, to develop and improve. We are so excited to have him as a key part of our club.”

Bristol City confirmed Norwich had met Manning’s release clause, reported to be in the region of £800,000.

Robins chairman Jon Lansdown said: “We are disappointed to lose Liam after such a successful campaign.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to Liam for his hard work and commitment over the past 18 months.

“We are assessing all options as we look to replace Liam.”
