MLS transfer interest in Sunderland’s Nectar Triantis

Triantis has been a huge hit in two separate loan spells at Easter Road, and the Scottish Premiership side are desperate to re-sign the 22-year-old this summer.

Hibs are said to be open to the idea of signing Triantis on a permanent deal or on another loan. If it’s the former, Sunderland will demand a package worth north of £1m.

But Hibs aren’t the only club interested in the Australian international, who doesn’t feature in the plans of Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris.

Previous reports have claimed clubs in Europe have been monitoring Triantis’ situation, while there’s now said to be interest from the United States. Multiple MLS clubs are reportedly keen on Triantis, who has reinvented himself as a holding midfielder in Scotland.

Triantis has only played once for Sunderland since Le Bris’ appointment 12 months ago, and with the Black Cats planning to further strengthen their squad this summer in preparation for their Premier League return, the former Central Coast Mariners man would be well down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light.

Triantis pulled out of the Australia squad last month ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Japan and South America, with national team boss Tony Popovic saying he had “a lot on his mind” amid the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Popovic said: “I’m not too sure where it exactly sits. But we had him in the squad for the camp, and on the day that he was supposed to travel, he informed us that he’s not coming in.

“He just said he’s got a lot of things on at the moment, a lot on his mind in terms of what he wants to do. We have to respect that, and we’ll see what happens.”
