Edwards was said to be on City’s radar as the Robins went about finding a replacement for Liam Manning after his departure for Norwich City.
But Boro’s rivals will appoint former New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg boss Struber, according to the Telegraph today. The Austrian is said to have impressed City chiefs in a string of interviews.
Struber has previous experience in the Championship having done a good job at Barnsley before leaving for New York Red Bulls in 2020.
Edwards – who won promotion out of the Championship with Luton – was one of the managers on Bristol City’s radar, but, as reported by the Northern Echo last week, has always been one of the leading contenders to take charge at Boro since Michael Carrick’s dismissal.

Edwards, Steve Cooper and Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl emerged as the leading candidates for the Boro job last week. Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard remains a short price with the bookmakers but hasn’t been in contention for the role.

Boro’s next boss will be tasked with challenging for promotion next season on the back of last term’s disappointing 10th-place finish that ultimately cost Carrick his job.
Carrick had hoped to continue in the role but Boro officials decided a fresh start was required in the dugout after conducting a thorough end-of-season review at Rockliffe.
Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick left with the head coach, but goalkeeper coach Alan Fettis remains at Boro, as does former captain Grant Leadbitter, who was part of Carrick’s coaching team.
