Will Osula’s Newcastle promise after Denmark goals

Newcastle’s striker is top of the tournament goal charts having hit the net three times in just two games, and hopes to add to his tally when Denmark take on Finland on Wednesday night in their final group match.

Osula joined Newcastle last summer but didn’t start a single Premier League game in his first season at the club and only played 124 league minutes throughout the campaign.

However, boss Eddie Howe was thrilled with Osula’s progression over the course of the season and believes the striker has a bright future on Tyneside.

And on the back of his debut year at Newcastle, Osula headed for Slovakia for the summer international tournament determined to show what he’s capable of.

He said: “I just need playing time to show what I can do. It means something to me.

“I already know and only myself and my father know what I can do.

“When playing time comes, everyone will see what I can do on the pitch.”

With Callum Wilson’s future still uncertain, Newcastle are looking to add to their forward line this summer to provide fresh competition and support for Alexander Isak, but assistant boss Jason Tindall said at the end of last season that the Magpies wouldn’t consider a temporary switch for Osula.

He said: “We’ve got no plans to sort of send Will out on loan, he’s an important part of the squad right now and we know in football, things can change very, very quickly.

“We’ve seen it time and time again throughout our managerial career, not just here.”

Meanwhile, Sean Neave’s dream year has continued after the teenage Newcastle striker signed a new contract with the Magpies.

The 18-year-old was named in a first team matchday squad for the first time when Newcastle beat Birmingham in the FA Cup fourth round at the start of this year, a reward for impressing at youth level.

Neave scored two minutes into his full Premier League 2 debut for the Under-21s during a 3-1 win away at Leeds.

And he ended up being a regular on Eddie Howe’s bench in the second half of the season, which included being named as a substitute for the Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool in March.

And he’s now signed a deal with the Magpies, as have England Under-18 internationals Leo Shahar and Trevan Sanusi.

Shahar and Sanusi, who signed their first professional contracts with the club in May last year, have impressed youth coaches on Tyneside since joining from Wolves and Birmingham City respectively.

Steve Harper, academy director, said: “Sean, Leo and Trevan have shown great promise and we’re delighted to see them continue their journey with us.

“Each of them has shown great commitment and potential, and we look forward to supporting their development as they take the next steps in their careers.”

Meanwhile, Joe Brayson, Logan Watts and Luke Craggs have signed their first professional contracts with the club.

Sam Alabi, Michael Mills and Sammy Pinnington have agreed first-year scholarships, while Thomas Bryant’s scholarship has been extended into a third year.

Harper said: “It’s always a proud moment to see young players progress their careers and earn their first professional contracts.

“The challenge now is to keep pushing, keep improving and make the most of the opportunities ahead but they should all take great pride in this recognition and use it as motivation for next season.”
