Newcastle United interested in Atalanta defender Giorgi Scalvini

The Magpies’ interest in Scalvini has strengthened in the last couple of weeks, with Marc Guehi seemingly set for a move to Liverpool if he opts to leave Crystal Palace this summer and the Eagles having lined up Ousmane Diomande, another potential Newcastle target, as his replacement.

Newcastle’s recruitment team are determined to sign a right-side centre-half to strengthen their defensive ranks this summer, and regard Scalvini as an appealing option who could be developed within the first-team group on Tyneside.

The 21-year-old has been regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Serie A since breaking into Atalanta’s senior group three years ago.

He has already won eight senior caps with the Italian national team, playing alongside Sandro Tonali, but suffered a series of injury issues that restricted him to just eight senior appearances last season.

Having suffered an ACL injury in 2004, Scalvini then injured his shoulder after returning to action, with the latter problem ruling him out of the final four months of the campaign.

Newcastle signed Tino Livramento off the back of an ACL issue, and are confident their medical procedures would ensure there was no risk in signing Scalvini this summer.

The Magpies are yet to make a formal approach to Atalanta officials, but their interest is genuine and Scalvini has previously spoken positively about the possibility of moving to the Premier League.

“For me, it’s (the Premier League) the best league there is, for the intensity,” he said, when asked about a potential move to England. “Once in my career, I don’t even know when, I’d like to play there.”

Known as a ball-playing centre-half, Scalvini, who has played in a back three and a back four, was part of the Atalanta side that won the Europa League in 2024. While Atalanta qualified for the Champions League last season, finishing in third position, Italian sources claim they could be tempted to cash in if Newcastle table an attractive offer.

Newcastle are also working on a deal to sign teenage South Korean forward Park from second-tier side Suwon Bluewings.

Talks are understood to have taken place over the 18-year-old, who would be a ‘project signing’ in the mould of Antonio Cordero, who was signed from Malaga earlier this summer and who will be sent out on loan next season.

Park, who has played as both a central striker and a left winger for his current employers, has made five appearances for South Korea’s Under-20s side and has also previously had trials with Bayern Munich.

He has been linked with Wolves in the past, but Newcastle are hoping to add him to their growing ranks of overseas academy signings. The Magpies have also previously agreed a deal for Georgian winger Vakhtang Salia, who will officially join them in August when he turns 18.

While Newcastle’s interest in Park is not directly related to their forthcoming trip to South Korea and Singapore, they would ideally like to have a deal in place before they head to Asia. The Magpies will play a friendly against a South Korean K-League All Stars team at the end of July before also taking on Tottenham in Seoul on August 3.

Newcastle’s main senior goalkeeping target remains James Trafford, and there could finally be movement on that front in the next few days with the Clarets having agreed a £4.2m deal with German club Karlsruher for 21-year-old shot-stopper Max Weiss.

Weiss is set to sign a four-year deal at Turf Moor, and his arrival should make it easier for the Magpies to persuade Burnley to sell them Trafford.

The Clarets turned down a series of Newcastle offers for the 22-year-old last summer, and while the newly-promoted club are continuing to stick to their £40m valuation, the expectation is that a deal will be struck for a lower initial up-front fee.
