Callum Wilson says emotional goodbye to Newcastle United

Wilson has today confirmed his St James’ Park exit, bringing to an end his five-year association with the club, in which he scored 49 goals in 130 appearances.

Wilson’s contract expired at the end of last season and while boss Eddie Howe was hopeful of keeping the 33-year-old on Tyneside, the striker opted to reject an incentivised deal and will now pursue a new challenge elsewhere.

“It’s time to say goodbye after an unbelieve few years in the Toon,” Wilson posted on social media.

“Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

“I am so proud to have worn the iconic number nine shirt and to have added a little more history to it.

“Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say.

“All good things come to an end but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my family’s hearts.

“Thanks for the memories.”

Newcastle said in a statement: “Callum Wilson has confirmed he will depart Newcastle United after five seasons at the club.

“From scoring on his debut against West Ham in 2020 to wearing the iconic number 9 shirt, Callum has played a huge part in our success in recent years and we thank him for all his contributions.

“Good luck for the future, CW9!”

Wilson’s last goal for Newcastle came in the FA Cup third round victory at Birmingham in January, which was the only time the former Bournemouth striker hit the net in what was a campaign heavily disrupted by injury.

Wilson’s exit leaves Newcastle with Alexander Isak and Will Osula as the only senior strikers in Howe’s squad.

Osula, who joined from Sheffield United 12 months ago, didn’t make a single Premier League start last season, but Howe and Jason Tindall were impressed by the development and progression of the 21-year-old, who impressed for Denmark at the recent European Under-21 Championships.

Newcastle were hopeful of adding to their forward line with the capture of Brighton’s Joao Pedro, but he instead joined Chelsea last week.
