Rob Edwards sets out Middlesbrough transfer position

Edwards’ Boro side played their first domestic friendly of the summer on Saturday when they drew 3-3 at Mansfield Town.

The Championship season kicks off three weeks today but Boro are yet to make a signing this summer.

But Edwards says he “needs to stress” that he’s calm about the situation, and is confident new faces will soon arrive.

Boro continue to push for a breakthrough in talks with Blackburn over Callum Brittain, who played for Rovers in their friendly against Everton on Saturday. And fresh reports from Hull earlier today claimed Alfie Jones is closing in on a move to the Riverside.

“We’re working hard on it,” said Edwards after Saturday’s game.

“It’s not a concern. It’s always difficult because you’ve got to agree so many different things with other parties.

“There’s players, agents and other clubs, and there’s all sorts of things involved with that.

“Of course we want to add some bodies and the guys are working really hard on doing that and helping us.

“I’m sure there will be some arrivals in the near future. I think we are close on a couple. I’m really hoping so. But at the moment, I’m working with what we’ve got, and I think we’ve got a very, very good group which I think we saw in large spells today.”

Edwards added: “New signings would give a lift, there’s no doubt about it. But I’m not worried about it at the moment, at all.

“I really need to stress that. I know there is a lot of hard work going on, and there is a good plan there in place.

“It’s not always easy to get things over the line. It’s probably quite clear that we need something else in one or two areas. But my focus right now has to be on the players we’ve got and are working with.

“We have got some really good players here, and I want to make sure I focus on that at the moment. But without doubt, when one or two new faces come in, it always lifts the group.”

Boro raced into a three-goal first half lead at Mansfield, with Dael Fry heading home the opener, Tommy Conway scoring from the spot and the impressive Morgan Whittaker adding the third. But Mansfield fought back after the break.

Edwards said: “I think we learned quite a lot. Pleased with lots of stuff – the first hour was quite good. We saw a strong level of control, we won it back quickly and I thought we looked a really threatening team too.

“Then we made a lot of changes and then the rhythm of the game went. It then gets frustrating because we lost any level of control that we had in the game.

“I just said to the lads, at that point, I’m then looking the wrong way on the pitch. I’m looking more towards our goal, which I don’t want. There are going to be periods where that does happen, of course.

“It’s understandable though. A few kids coming on and three left-sided players in that back four when we changed it to that. We lost our rhythm and control. So I’m frustrated with how it finished, but there were a lot of positives to take as well.”
