Rob Edwards’ transfer pledge as Middlesbrough talks continue

Jones became Boro’s first summer signing on Friday when he completed a £3m move from Hull City, and the Teessiders remain active in the transfer market on a number of different fronts.

Talks with Troyes over midfielder Abdoulaye Kante have reached an advanced stage, with a deal worth around €3m understood to be on the table for the 20-year-old.

Boro remain in dialogue with Blackburn Rovers over right-back Callum Brittain, having had an initial bid rejected earlier this month, and have also held talks with free agent Danny Ings about a possible deal.

“I hope we’ll have more soon,” said Edwards, who will lead his side back into pre-season action on Wednesday when they make the short trip up the A19 to face Hartlepool United. “We’re working so hard on it.

“I completely appreciate that in every window, supporters want to see fresh faces. They get excited by that.

“We are working hard on it and I’m pretty sure there will be more within the next week or so. Everyone at the club is hoping there are more to follow soon.”

For now, Jones is the sole addition, but Edwards is delighted to have been able to recruit the 27-year-old defender.

Jones has made at least 40 Championship appearances in each of the last three seasons, and is set to become an important part of Edwards’ defensive unit, with the Boro boss seemingly set on playing with three centre-halves and wing-backs.

“It was great to get Alfie through the door,” said Edwards. “I think he’s a brilliant person and he’s going to be a great signing for us. I’m really excited to work with him.

“Alfie has got a lot of strengths. I said to him, we have a video on him from when we did our work on him before signing him. I told him, ‘If you’re ever struggling for confidence Alfie, come look at this video I’ve got of you because it makes you look like Beckenbauer!’

“He can pass, he can head it, he can run, he defends – defends really well in one-on-ones. I thought he was really aggressive when he came on [against Rangers] and showed some really good qualities, winning his duels. He’s a good player, which is why we’ve got him. I’m really excited to work with him.”

Jones was a second-half substitute at Ibrox, making his first appearance in a Boro shirt just 24 hours after his signing was officially completed.

He has been involved in the early part of Hull’s pre-season, so shouldn’t need too much getting up to speed ahead of the start of the Championship campaign in less than a fortnight’s time.

“He’s not really trained for a week,” said Edwards. “We got him [on Friday] and were able to do a bit of work with him.

“But to be able to introduce him for this, I mean, what a debut! He’ll remember that for a long, long time. It was great to get him on and introduce him to all the boys.”
