Regis Le Bris’ current thinking on Sunderland’s Nectar Trantis

Triantis was not involved in yesterday’s pre-season friendly at Tynecastle, which saw Sunderland crash to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Hearts.

His absence was due to a minor injury issue rather than anything to do with transfer talks, but Le Bris admits he is still weighing up his options over the 22-year-old.

Triantis, who has two years of his current contract on Wearside remaining, has had two hugely successful loan spells at Hibernian, and the Scottish club would love to sign him permanently this summer.

However, it is far from certain whether they would be able to meet Sunderland’s asking price or match Triantis’ wages on Wearside, which rose significantly due to a promotion clause that kicked in when the Black Cats secured their return to the Premier League in May.

There is also understood to be continental interest in Triantis, although at this stage, none of the clubs linked with the versatile defensive midfielder have tabled a formal offer.

Le Bris started the summer by claiming he wanted to see Triantis at first hand on the training ground and in pre-season games before making a decision over his future. That position has not changed, even though the start of the new Premier League season is now less than three weeks away.

“It was a small injury [why he didn’t play at Hearts] and he should be available soon,” said the Sunderland boss. “We haven’t made a decision over his future yet.

“We don’t know what will happen, we will see. We are trying to find the right balance for the squad, so we will see if it is possible to move with him or not.”

Le Bris is also weighing up whether to keep Ahmed Abdullahi and Milan Aleksic as part of his first-team group next season or send the attacking duo out on loan. Both players were second-half substitutes as Sunderland lost in Edinburgh yesterday.
