Brancepeth Castle Golf Club celebrates double league title win

Brancepeth Castle Golf Club’s men’s and women’s teams secured their respective league honours, with the men’s first team clinching the title on Tuesday night.

The women’s A team also claimed victory, winning the Durham County Anderson Shield for the 15th consecutive year after defeating Eaglescliffe Golf Club.

The historic course, in the former Brancepeth Castle deer park, was designed in 1924 by renowned golf architect Harry Colt. The women's A team The women’s A team (Image: Supplied)

Mr Colt created more than 300 courses around the world, including Muirfield and Wentworth.

Brancepeth Castle is widely regarded as one of the finest courses in the North East.

Its signature ninth hole, set over the castle’s former gardens, was described by the late Peter Alliss as “one of the hardest (and best) par threes in the world”.

Former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher famously scored a hole-in-one on the 10th during the club’s 75th anniversary.
