Sunderland appoint James Brayne as set-piece coach

Brayne, who joins from Charlton Athletic, will focus on set-pieces.

The set-piece specialist joined the Addicks 18 months ago and played a key role behind the scenes in helping Charlton win promotion to the Championship last season.

Charlton manager Nathan Jones said: “James is a very good coach who has progressed during his time at the football club.

“He came in to a development coaching role with no first-team experience and we saw what he could do and took a leap of faith, and he repaid that faith and played his part in our promotion-winning season.

“He’s a great lad, has been an excellent part of our coaching team and he goes with our best wishes.”

Brayne is the latest new addition to Le Bris’ coaching team. Earlier in the summer, Luciano Vulcano joined as assistant head coach, Isidre Ramón Madir was appointed assistant coach and Neil Cutler became the club’s new goalkeeper coach.

There was also an exit, with Pedro Ribeiro leaving the club at the start of this month.

At the time, Speakman said: “Following the recent restructure within our coaching team, we have been in regular dialogue with Pedro and agreed to mutually part ways.

“We thank him for his contribution to the club and for the role he played in our promotion-winning campaign. Everyone at the Academy of Light wishes him well in the next chapter of his career.”
