Sunderland make unlikely alliance with Mexican football fans

Black Cats fans might have noticed replies to club posts on social media featuring more Mexican flags and Spanish language than usual since the club’s return to the top flight.

This is for one reason alone, Mexicans decided en masse to support the club this year.

“Twitter Mexico is getting together to support a random European team this season to throw fans off when they see Mexicans cheering for them. The chosen team is Sunderland,” a popular Mexican football fan account on X said in a post.

“This season all of Mexico is with Sunderland.”

And, following the club’s impressive 3-0 win over West Ham on the opening day, the messages from Mexico did not stop, with new fans pouring in to show their support for the newly-promoted team.

The club responded: “¡Hola, Mexico! We’re proud to have your passion with us this season,” and have also posted a video of players answering questions about Mexican culture.

Sunderland has been flooded by Mexican memes in the comments section, with various internet characters professing their love of Sunderland in Spanish, while others have promoted some Mexican players that the Wearside club could look to sign in the transfer window.

Messages of support like “Qe viva el Sunderland de Mexico” – “Long live Sunderland, Mexico” and “Del Sunderland hasta la muerte” – “Sunderland ’til I die” have accompanied images of cats, skeletons, and even cartoons as the South Americans rush to offer support to their new club.

More colourful responses include hailing results as “Pure f****** Sunderland” with imagery of a skeleton brandishing automatic guns and donning a red and white scarf.

One thing is for sure, if Sunderland gain nothing else from their first season back in the Premier League since 2017, they have made a mark on the international stage out of pure, good natured, internet fun.
