Now their latest biblical epic is finally hitting UK cinemas this weekend and it’s a CG-animated musical retelling of the story of the Old Testament prophet David, in his younger years. Following on from a five-part TV miniseries called Young David, David the movie follows the Israelite shepherd boy from his anointing as future King of Israel, through slaying Goliath and his trouble with King Saul.
As is the case with these American takes, it’s somewhat Disneyfied, sanitised and cheesy compared to the true grit of the Old Testament. The songs are decent, if boybandish, with Christian singer-songwriter voicing Phil Wickham. However, they don’t quite reach the catchiness or heights of the Prince of Egypt. Nevertheless, the film’s biggest strength is the outstanding CG-animation, which is very impressive for a studio outside of the main Hollywood stable. Certainly worth a look for families and the faith curious.
David hits UK cinemas on Friday.
