Moors were the underdogs going into the game, but they produced some exciting football, and scored twice through their talisman Glen Taylor to put them into the last four.
The victory means that Moors have now won twice on their long-distance travels – they beat Hampton and Richmond Borough two rounds ago – on top of victories against South Shields, Alfreton and Boston, and they won’t be worried about who they face in the semi-finals over one leg.
Manager Graeme Lee said: “It’s brilliant to reach the semi-finals. We’re excited, we’ve proven that home or away we can go and get a result. It’s fantastic for everyone involved with the club
“We had to be disciplined. I thought we lost our discipline and shape in our league game against Marine in midweek a little bit especially in possession of the ball. We left ourselves wide open then, but we rectified that against a strong team.
“I felt that we did that well, how we set up, how the lads passed and recovered and fought for very ball.
“I thought in the first half we created some really good chances, we felt as if we could hurt them in certain areas. They were two great goals by Glen, they helped us see the game out.
“We knew that Sutton have good players going forward, and we wanted to entice them into playing the first pass, so we could try and jump on that. It did frustrate them at times, but we had Brad James to thank for a couple of saves.
“But the whole desire and work ethic were different class from the lads. It’s hard work to win football games. It hurts, it’s painful, but when you get a result like that, it’s brilliant.”
Moors started the game well, and under pressure, Sutton defender Hayden Muller nearly put Taylor’s cross from the left into his own net in the opening minutes.
Sutton replied with a good effort by Will Davies that Spennymoor keeper Brad James just managed to keep out.
Moors took the lead on 16 minutes, when Taylor, so often the provider of important goals in big games for the club, controlled a high ball from Ben Beals, and blasted it past Sutton keeper Jack Sims.
It was nearly 2-0 when Reece Staunton crossed for Corey McKeown to control and force a good save out of Sims.
The home keeper also came to his side’s rescue again when Dan Rowe almost forced the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble, but Sims just managed to stop the ball from going over the line.
The National League side, who were relegated from the Football League at the end of last season, nearly levelled at the start of the second half with a header by Josh Coley, but Beals managed to head the ball off the line. James then pulled off another great save from Lewis Simper.
Sutton piled on the pressure and looked likely to equalise, but Moors caught them out with a few minutes remaining, when Staunton crossed for Taylor to coolly beat Sims and send the travelling fans wild.
Moors are in the hat for this afternoon’s semi-final draw, which will be broadcast live on Talksport 2, along with National League sides Rochdale, Woking and Aldershot.
