Burnley 2-0 Sunderland player ratings as Black Cats suffer defeat

6 Roefs: Could do little about Cullen’s well placed goal and Anthony did well for the second.

6 Hume: Didn’t do much wrong defensively. Clearly still early days in his partnership with Talbi.

6 Ballard: Forced off injured after just eight minutes. Suffered the injury when he climbed to win a header in Burnley box, from which Mayenda should have scored.

6 Alderete: Composed and solid first full 90 minutes for the Alderete. Limited Burnley to few opportunities and will be frustrated not to have kept a clean sheet.

6 Reinildo: Good in the first half, when he was in Burnley’s faces and got forward at every opportunity.

7 Xhaka: Controlled the first half and pulled the strings for Sunderland. Didn’t have as much influence after the break when Burnley improved.

6 Sadiki: Saw lots of the ball in the first half. Good understanding with those around him. Faded after the break.

6 Diarra: Full of energy and positive running, but, like his teammates, often lacked moment of quality in final third. Replaced late on.

5 Talbi: Unfortunate to miss early chance when he chipped wide but otherwise quiet and ineffective.

6 Adingra: Linked up well with Reinildo and Sadiki and created early chance for Talbi.

5 Mayenda: Missed early sitter, which was his only chance and a decisive moment. Couple of driving runs but largely contained.

SUBSTITUTES:

6 Seelt (for Ballard, 9): Will have been relieved to hear referee’s whistle when Foster hit the net.

6 Le Fee (for Adingra, 64): Roar from the stands when he was introduced. Tried to make something happen.

5 Roberts (for Talbi, 64): Couldn’t make a difference from the bench.

5 Isidor (for Mayenda, 64): Will have been desperate to make amends for last year’s penalty nightmare but didn’t get much of a sniff.

Guiu (for Diarra, 80): N/A
