Celebrations mark Durham University RFC’s 150th anniversary

The 150th anniversary of Durham University Rugby Football Club (DURFC) will be marked with a showpiece game between its men’s first XV and the Barbarians invitational team.

A day of celebration at Durham City Rugby Club’s Hollow Drift ground, on Green Lane, Durham, on Saturday (May 3), will also feature past and present players of the university women’s rugby club playing a North East Select XV.

Founded 1875, DURFC, whose nickname is The Palatinates, is one of the oldest sporting clubs within the university.

Known simply as the Barbarians, it is a team brought together with players invited from different clubs to play a few matches each year.

The Barbarians’ ethos is to enjoy the camaraderie of the game and play attacking, adventurous rugby without the pressure or expectation of having to win.

It is said to be only the fourth time a UK university has been invited to play against The Barbarians.
