Darlington injury concern and Steve Watson’s honest assessment

Darlington injury concern and Steve Watson’s honest assessment

The striker was forced off at the midway stage of Darlington’s 3-1 National League North defeat at home to Fylde on Tuesday night after a clash of heads.

And concerned boss Steve Watson will now closely assess Main in training this week ahead of Saturday’s trip to Kings Lynn.

“Cedric has been excellent in pre-season and was excellent on Saturday,” said Watson.

“He wasn’t at his very best with the ball [against Fylde] but he constantly asks questions.

“That was a bit of a blow when he came off and it looked quite a nasty cut so there’s no guarantee he’ll be back in the next game or two.”

Main’s injury capped a bad night for Darlington, who conceded two late goals to suffer their second successive home defeat, with Saturday’s win at Alfreton sandwiched in between.

Elliot Forbes cancelled out Fylde’s early opener on Tuesday, but the visitors snatched the points after two goals in the last five minutes, and Watson had no complaints about the outcome.

“We were really the architects of our own downfall,” he said.

“As good as we were on Saturday with the ball, we were poor tonight.

“They deserved to win the game. They’re a good side, played well, pressed us high. The fact we couldn’t keep the ball means we couldn’t get a rest.

“As the game was wearing down, we did look dead on our feet. I mainly put that down to the fact we didn’t keep the ball for any length of time.

“All their chances were breakaways from us losing the ball, it’s not like they were carving us open, we just kept giving the ball away.

“We were in the game for large spells. We could have nicked it. Would we have been able to hang on? Who knows. That was a pivotal moment for us. That one chance at 1-1, we’ll never know.”

Despite the result, Watson was pleased his side hung on in there for as long as they did on what was a frustrating night.

“I never doubt the character of the lads to stay in games and be gritty,” he said.

“It’s a lot of the same players who rolled their sleeves up when I got here and things looked down and out.

“There’s still loads of character but too many had an off day, especially with the ball.

“There were some good performances. Josh Scott was excellent, Pete [Jameson] kept us in it, Jack [Maskell] did well when he came on.

“It wasn’t all bad, but the right team won unfortunately.”

It doesn’t get any easier for Darlington. Saturday’s opponents Kings Lynn are second in the table and thumped Spennymoor 5-0 at Brewery Field on Tuesday night.

“They’ve had a tremendous result,” said Watson.

“We have a really tough long away game. They’ve put on a tremendous performance at Spennymoor.

“We’re up against it but it’s not the first time we’ve had big challenges and overcome them, so we’ll regroup and go again Saturday.”
