Lancashire vs Durham: Ryan Campbell challenges senior players

Durham take on Lancashire at Liverpool looking to bounce back from defeats to Middlesex and Northamptonshire that have left them sitting sixth in the Group B table with three more games to play.

Campbell’s side failed to defend a target of 388 against Middlesex, eventually losing by five wickets, and were skittled for just 171 against Northants as they never came close to chasing down a target of 322.

Campbell was unhappy with both performances, and is looking for a marked improvement against a Lancashire side that currently sit one place below Durham in the table.

“We had two awful days at the office last week, to be honest,” said the Durham head coach. “It was not acceptable for what we pride ourselves on.

“Against Northamptonshire, I thought we started really well with the ball, but we couldn’t stem the tide once the partnership got going. That’s credit to the batters, but our bowling staff have to understand that you’re going to get put under pressure in this competition and you have to find a way.

“At the minute, we’re not finding a way. That’s disappointing. We have to take a breath and dig deep.

“We saw a 17-year-old debut in Robbie Bowman, and he did a really good job, but we have senior players who need to put their hands up. Against Middlesex, they were unbelievable with the bat. Against Northamptonshire, we were really poor.”

Campbell has named a squad of 14 for today’s game, with Sam Conners in contention to make his Durham List A debut. Scott Borthwick is added to the squad, with Luke Robinson and David Bedingham dropping out.

Having led Durham earlier in the campaign against Somerset and Kent, Ollie Robinson will once resume captaincy duties for the remainder of the group stage.

“Ollie Robinson will captain the side for the last three group games of the competition,” confirmed Campbell. “It was always our intention for Ollie to gain captaincy experience throughout the 50-over competition and on the back of leading the side against Somerset and Kent, he will skipper this week.”
