Signing a centre-back remains a priority for the Magpies in the coming transfer window after last summer’s failed pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
Fabian Schar’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, though the former Switzerland international is still expected to sign a one-year extension, but Jamaal Lascelles, who hasn’t played a single minute this term, is also coming to the end of his current deal.
After three difficult transfer windows in which Newcastle had their hands tied because of Profit and Sustainability Rules, the Magpies will be in a much stronger position this summer and club chiefs are determined to strengthen Eddie Howe’s Carabao Cup winning squad.
A right-sided attacker will be among the priorities, while a striker could also arrive, depending on Callum Wilson’s future. The 33-year-old’s contract is up in the summer. Newcastle have Will Osula but the youngster is still deemed an exciting prospect for the future and his progress will continue to be closely assessed.
But strengthening at the heart of the defence will be deemed a must, and Quansah is again on Newcastle’s wishlist, as he was last summer.

The Magpies were eventually able to keep Gordon after raising the required funds through the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, but have continued to assess and admire Quansah from afar.
However, Liverpool are said to have no intention of cashing in on the 22-year-old, who has featured heavily for Arne Slot’s side this season. The academy graduate has played 22 times in all competitions for the Premier League leaders and was rewarded with a new long-term contract.
Liverpool are thought to value Quansah – who has broken into the England senior squad this season – at £50m plus. And with Virgil van Dijk’s future still unclear as things stand as he approaches the end of his contract, Liverpool are said to be determined to keep Quansah.
Liverpool are one of several clubs who would love to sign Alexander Isak this summer but Newcastle’s striker is not for sale.
Chief executive Eales said last month: “We’re not under the gun to sell any of our key players – it would be crazy to consider it.
“They’re all under long-term contracts. We know he’s a world‑class player and others covet him. But it’s annoying because it’s almost as if we’re seen as a club in the next category down and it’s fair game to talk about our players leaving.”
