The Teessiders extended their 100 per cent start to the Championship season as they beat Norwich City 2-1 yesterday, and there should be more good news in the next couple of days with two transfer deals close to being agreed.
Matt Targett is set to join on a season-long loan from Newcastle United, with the left-back potentially set to go straight into the starting line-up for next weekend’s home game with Sheffield United. While Sammy Silvera has slotted in at left wing-back in the opening month of the campaign, the Australian looked shaky on a number of occasions yesterday.
Boro are also in advanced talks with Lausanne over Kaly Sene, with an agreement over a permanent deal for the Senegalese striker understood to be close.
Sene, who started his career in Juventus’ youth ranks, has started the current season in blistering fashion with Lausanne, scoring six goals in eight matches in the Swiss league and UEFA Conference League.
“We’re getting close in a couple of areas,” said Edwards. “I don’t really want to say much more than that at the moment.
“The guys have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes and we’re getting there now. The squad is starting to look stronger, with people returning from injury as well which really helps.

“It’s great when you can turn around and people can make an impact. If we’re able to bring a couple more in, then that will stand us in really good stead going into what we know is a jam-packed period with loads of games. You’re going to need that group.”
Sverre Nypan completed a season-long loan move from Manchester City last week, and the Norwegian teenager made his debut as a second-half substitute in yesterday’s win at Carrow Road.
Nypan helped Boro survive a chaotic finish, even if he and Aidan Morris spurned an excellent opportunity to score a third goal seconds before Josh Sargent scored for Norwich to make it 2-1.
“It was nice to get him [Nypan] on,” said Edwards. “I said to him, ‘Welcome to English football’ because there was a lot going on in that brief time that he got on the pitch.
“I think there was about three games going on in the 25 minutes or so he was on. It’ll be great learning for him.”
