The Echo understands Boro have put together an attractive deal to bring the 29-year-old back to the Riverside.
But Rob Edwards’ side will face a battle against Championship rivals Birmingham City who are also interested in the forward.
Akpom was Boro’s leading scorer in the Championship in the 2022/23 season and a popular player among fans.

He completed a move to the Eredivisie side worth a reported €12.3m plus add-ons in August 2023.

After arriving on Teesside from Greek side PAOK Salonika, Akpom made a total of 82 senior appearances for the Teessiders, scoring 34 goals.
