Middlesbrough rivals Hull learn fate after transfer embargo appeal

Middlesbrough’s Championship rivals announced in early July that they would appeal against the English Football League punishment and were “confident of resolving the matter”, with owner Acun Ilicali hopeful the panel would accept the club’s explanation for late payments and outstanding fees.

But their appeal has only been partially successful. City must still operate under the restrictions – which mean they can cannot pay fees for transfers or loans – for two windows – the current and January – with the third suspended.

In a statement, the club confirmed the ruling and added: “Our justification regarding the payment dates was not accepted by the panel.

“As we have demonstrated in recent weeks, we still remain able to sign players – either on loan or as free agents.

“Challenges will never break us; they only make us stronger.”

Hull are unbeaten in their first two league games this season under new boss Sergej Jakirovic, with free transfer signing Oli McBurnie scoring their winner against Oxford on Sunday. They drew at Coventry on the opening day.
