Newcastle United Women’s captain says farewell after shock departure

The former Everton and Crystal Palace midfielder, 32, was released by manager Becky Langley and told to find another club a fortnight ago.

And Toon fan Stobbs, who was named after former Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan, is still on the look-out after moving to the North East two years ago.

Ambitious Newcastle finished a disappointing fifth behind local rivals Durham in the Championship last season, halting their progress through the leagues after two successive promotions.

And much-travelled Stobbs, who made 21 appearances last season, is one of a number of regulars and local players who have now been released since they reached the WSL 2.

In February Stobbs became a Newcastle United Foundation ambassador, along with the club’s England international Dan Burn.

She also talked about the “honour and privilege” of captaining the team she supports and yesterday, in an emotional post on Facebook, Stobbs revealed her departure had come “sooner than expected”.

She wrote: “Geordies 🖤🤍

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out after hearing the news, I’ve been blown away by the response and kind words.

“I have loved the journey and my time at Newcastle United and, although it has come to an end sooner than I expected, it’s a privilege to have played for my childhood club.

“I leave knowing that I gave absolutely everything I could both on and off the pitch for the fans and the club.

“To Wor Fans, (this is by far the hardest part)… you made me and the team feel on top of the world and I will cherish those memories forever. I can’t put into words how grateful I am and how much I loved hearing wor fans, seeing the black and white shirts in their thousands and that unique feeling football has in the Toon. You are truly unmatched.

“Thank you to all my team-mates and the friends I’ve made along the way – you made this experience.

“I grew up a Newcastle fan and have now lived a dream that wasn’t a reality in the ’90s for young girls like me.

“I fell more deeply in love with this club, this city and that dream. It’s been an absolute pleasure and I thank you all so much.

“I will forever be proud that I got to wear the badge and lead the team out for the last two years. Thanks again for all your support. AKS 🖤🤍🤘🏼”
