The first leg will take place at the CBS Arena on Friday night, with the return leg four days later at the Stadium of Light.
Coventry climbed to fifth on the final day thanks to their 2-0 win over Middlesbrough, with Bristol City only managing a draw at home to Preston.
Sheffield United will face Bristol City in the other semi-final. Sunderland go into the play-offs on the back of five straight defeats after their 1-0 loss to QPR on the final day.
Sunderland drew 2-2 with Coventry when the sides met the Stadium of Light in November before losing 3-0 in the return fixture in March.

Sunderland have received an allocation of 2,815 tickets, which are now on sale. Full information can be found HERE.

Season ticket holders can still secure their seats for what Sunderland have described as an exclusive loyalty price.
The offer will be available until Tuesday, May 6, after which loyalty pricing will expire, general sale pricing will be introduced and all seats will be released.
Tickets are available online or in person at the Stadium of Light ticket office, which is open from 10am-5pm Monday to Friday. The ticket office will be closed next Monday, May 5 for the Bank Holiday.
Due to the short turnaround before the game, tickets will not be available to buy over the phone.
