Visit Cook County director talks North Shore tourism

Many first-time visitors think they've “done” the North Shore if they drive from Duluth to Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Lighthouse north of Two Harbors.

While those are great jaunts up Highway 61, Linda Jurek wants tourists to know that to really get a sense of the shore, they should stop through places like Silver Bay, Tofte, Grand Marais and Grand Portage near the tip of Minnesota’s Arrowhead.

The economy in the area is reliant on the 1.2 million tourists who visit annually and support 81 percent of the county’s jobs.

Jurek, the executive director of Visit Cook County and the Cook County Chamber of Commerce, joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer on Morning Edition at WTIP in Grand Marais Tuesday to delve deeper into regional attractions, cross-border tourism, the impact of international students and more.
