Film enthusiasts have been left deeply moved following the release of the trailer for Andrew Scott’s latest project, Elsinore, with many flocking to the comments section to express their reactions. Elsinore follows the final months of celebrated Scottish actor Ian Charleson (portrayed by Scott) as he took on the role of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the National Theatre in London. Despite being diagnosed with HIV, Charleson delivered an unforgettable performance in the Shakespearean tragedy. One viewer posted: “Only Andrew Scott could bring you to tears with a trailer alone.” A second wrote: “This def had me seriously tearing up [sic].”
A third commented: “oh man im ready to be devesated by andrew scott’s performance in this [sic].” A fourth said: “It looks like it’s gonna kill me….no one destroys me like Andrew Scott..” A fifth remarked: “The film is not even out yet and already I know that I am going to lose my heart to it and that Andrew Scott is going to mesmerise and amaze us all with his talent and all of his acting, heart and soul he’ll put into this,” reports the Irish Mirror.
Someone else added: “This film is going to be so special to me. As an actor who adores the National Theatre, I got instant chills when he mentioned that story of how the cast bangs on the dressing room windows!”
Others have suggested Scott’s portrayal could secure him an Academy Award, with one writing: “start engraving his name on that oscar right now [sic].”
A second viewer remarked: “Well based on last year, Shakespeare tragedy + Irish = Oscar”, while another declared: “Give this man your Oscar! !”
A fourth person echoed: “Give this man your Oscar! !” with yet another sharing the same enthusiasm: “Andrew Scott is such an amazing talented actor! This will definitely bring him an Oscar nomination. Looking forward to seeing this Film.”
Even from the trailer alone, Scott delivers a deeply compelling portrayal of the Gandhi and Chariots of Fire star, as he reflects on stepping into the iconic role of Hamlet, interspersed with footage of Charleson confiding in friends and his doctor about accepting the part.
The film features a stellar ensemble cast, including Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman, Billie Piper of Doctor Who and Scoop fame, and MobLand’s Johnny Flynn. Rounding out the cast are Bridgerton’s Luke Thompson, Monica Dolan from Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, David Dawson of The Last Kingdom, Sherwood’s Adeel Akhtar, Slow Horses actor Kadiff Kirwan, Heartstopper’s Joe Locke, Ozark’s Peter Mullan and Dickie Beau.
In addition to taking the lead role, Sherlock star Scott also serves as a producer on the project. Elsinore wrapped filming earlier this year in January, and the movie has been generating considerable excitement well before the trailer even dropped.
Elsinore will be released in UK cinemas in January 29, 2027
