We already had a pretty good idea that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy was in the works, but Warner Bros has now officially confirmed that the game is in active development.
In a letter to shareholders, Warner Bros included a lengthy segment that highlighted the impressive success it’s seen in the last quarter. At the end, it had an exciting tease for Harry Potter fans.
“Games remain an important growth lever as we work toward our long-term Studios segment goals,” the gaming segment of the letter starts. “During the second quarter, we released LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight – the highest rated LEGO game ever – and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, our second mobile game from the Game of Thrones universe. These releases marked the first launches under our refocused strategy centered around four key $1 billion+ franchises with disciplined investment behind fewer, higher conviction titles.”
“We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy,” the segment continues. This is the first time that Warner Bros has officially confirmed that a sequel to the 2023 hit is in the works.
Sadly, the report doesn’t give fans any further indication as to when we might expect the sequel to release on consoles and PC. We’ll need to keep our eyes peeled for more information on that front, although with Gamescom right around the corner, there’s every hope we could see a tease at Opening Night Live.
In reality, it should come as no real surprise that Warner Bros has greenlit a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy. The first game sold an absolute metric tonne of units, with current sales thought to have surpassed 40 million units.
That earns it entry into the top 20 best selling games of all time, on par with games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Payday 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog.
As such, it’s been an incredible money spinner for Warner Bros, partly down to the craftsmanship of the team at Avalanche Software, but also down to the sheer audience pull that the Harry Potter license has with it. That’s despite the huge shadow of original creator JK Rowling that hangs over it with her controversial opinions on Trans Rights souring the series for many.
It could be that we see Hogwarts Legacy 2 tie into this new HBO show. Or, it could continue with its original trajectory and stay rooted in the past.
